Written by Jimmy Webb for the Supremes and became an instant classic as soon as it was released. I don’t know anyone who dislikes the Supremes, so put on your headphones and sway to the sweet tunes.

This popular girl group from the 60s had a lot of Motown rhythm in their songs. Their Version of Sleigh Ride is one of the best.

6. “Winter Wonderland” by Ray Charles.

Ray Charles is a legend and Winter Wonderland is a classic, so put the two together and you have a great Motown Christmas song. It is an absolute treat to listen to.

The Drifters really drifted themselves into a great Christmas song. The old classic feeling with this song makes you feel like you are right at home.

If you’re starting to shop for cheap guitars to get you going, there are a few considerations that you should keep in mind while you begin your selection process.  Although budget is always an important factor, it is more important that you get an instrument of high enough quality so that your learning experience won’t be slowed down by adverse and annoying guitar issues.

The reason cheap guitars don’t cost that much is largely because their manufacturing tolerances aren’t terribly tight, meaning that guitars of the same make, model and type produced by any given manufacturer will all have widely-varying quality characteristics.  One particular guitar may not quite stay properly in tune, while the same model of guitar next to it on the music store rack may hold its tune almost perfectly.  Because of this wide quality variance, it’s not enough just to select the make and model of guitar that you want to make your own.  You should individually pick your guitar.

Over the years, I’ve developed an exercise which helps increase dexterity.  For the sake of clarity, I’ll refer to fingers by “number”.  Your index finger is 1, your middle finger is 2, your ring finger is 3, and your pinky is 4.  It’s easiest to do this exercise on a larger instrument, like an aulos tenor recorder- something with a good stretch between the fingers.

To do the exercise, there is no actual playing necessary- the recorder can be away from your mouth for this (you can even do this in front of the TV).  All we’ll do is lift the fingers in patterns and sequences.  For each sequence I give, just lift the finger that corresponds to each number, then place it back down.  For example, if I give 1-2-3-4, that means lift the first finger, then place it back down, then the same with the second, third, and fourth.  Here’s the first exercise:

It looks simple on paper, but to execute it convincingly is somewhat challenging.  Repeat this exercise for a few minutes each day until you’ve developed some facility, particularly in the 3rd finger.  Once you have, you can move on to this exercise:

1/3-2/4

Meaning, lift the first and third fingers simultaneously, then the second and fourth simultaneously.  You’ll find that because of the ligament structure in the hand, this exercise takes quite a while to master- but once you do, you’ll see immediate improvement in your cross-fingering facility on the recorder.

My personal experience finding the perfect DJ headphones is that I was cheap on my first pair, getting some Sony’s for around $45. They still sound fine but they don’t fully cover my ears, so I eventually dropped the big bucks for MDRs. Those lasted more than five or six years, but finally gave out because the plastic posts cracked a bit. Six years isn’t bad considering how much wear and tear they got.
